The Perro family is part of a larger extended family living in the Tarpon Springs area and Marie has warm relationships with her parents, sister, grandparents, and assorted aunts, uncles, and cousins, though she has sometimes found the family togetherness a bit overwhelming. Several of Marie's extended family members have histories of service in the Navy, though she is the first female member of the family to enlist. Her parents were initially shocked by her choice but have been supportive and quite proud after getting used to the idea, though some of Marie's older female relatives still have mixed feelings about her service.

Work history: Worked in the family restaurant business prior to graduation. Entered military service shortly after graduation from high school.

After completing basic training and technical school, assigned to an amphibious transport dock where she became close friends with Linda Grant. She completed the unit's unofficial requirements for continuing education, physical fitness, marksmanship, and “personal enrichment” – in her case, a mixed jujutsu style of martial arts – and has earned the hippocampus pin awarded to women who remain with the unit for at least 12 months. Assigned as a radioman aboard USS Janus with the additional duty of serving as a bodyguard for female civilian personnel when necessary. Following Janus' return from the Bronze Age, married SEAL radioman Erol Wehby and separated from Naval service. Expecting the couple's first child at the time of Janus' second voyage.
Religious background and beliefs: Greek Orthodox; attended the same church as most of her family throughout her childhood and adolescence.

Mental health history: No formal history. She received some crisis counseling from the Janus' psychiatrist, Dr. Cagle, after her rescue from enslavement.
Traumatic experiences: After being captured by a Bronze Age trader, she was purchased and raped by the son of the vessel's captain.
