A practical thinker, not much concerned with theorizing or following fads. Well-organized in her work and personal habits but adaptable. Physically active and sometimes uses activity to avoid unpleasant thoughts and feelings.
Family background: Father owns a small hardware store in southern Ohio; mother is a secretary at the local elementary school and also does the bookkeeping for her husband's business. Grant is the second of four children; she has a sister three years older, a brother two years younger, and a sister six years younger. Family relationships generally affectionate but older sister took on a quasi-maternal role relatively young as both parents worked long hours. Grant sometimes felt overlooked between her responsible older sister and her younger siblings (particularly her brother) and compensated by becoming a good softball player and a cheerleader. She dated the school's star football receiver during her last two years of high school and became pregnant by him shortly before graduation, leading to a marriage that did not survive a miscarriage and her husband's increasingly apparent drinking habit. She resumed using her maiden name following her divorce. She has since admitted to herself that she stayed with her boyfriend/husband as long as she did mostly because everyone in her social circle had come to expect that they would be together. She went into the Navy at age 20 to make a break from her past.
Education: High school graduate; has earned a year of college credit in business operations through on-line courses. Unsure yet as to whether she wants to stop with an associate's degree or complete a bachelor's degree.
Work history: Baby-sitting and pet-sitting while in high school, mostly during the summers. Lived with her parents after the breakdown of her marriage and entered military service about six months after her divorce.
Military service: Entered Navy at age 20 and had risen to the rank of Seaman by the time of Janus' first voyage. After completing basic training and technical school, assigned to an amphibious transport dock where she became close friends with Marie Perro. She completed the unit's unofficial requirements for continuing education, physical fitness, marksmanship, and “personal enrichment” – in her case, a mixed jujutsu style of martial arts – and has earned the hippocampus pin awarded to women who remain with the unit for at least 12 months. Currently an administrative assistant for the executive officer of the USS Janus with the additional duty of serving as a bodyguard for female civilian personnel when necessary.
Religious background and beliefs: Baptist, but still working through what she believes and why. Attends Sunday morning services sometimes when not deployed.
Hobbies and leisure activities: Spends a good bit of her free time keeping up her fitness and her martial arts skills; still enjoys playing softball when she has the chance. A good swimmer who enjoys snorkeling. Has a taste for historical fiction when she feels like reading.
Medical history: No significant medical issues.
Mental health history: No formal history. She did receive some pastoral counseling from the youth pastor of her home church and his wife following her miscarriage and divorce and has been grateful for their understanding and assistance.
Traumatic experiences: Increasing fights with her husband over his drinking and his emotional withdrawal following her miscarriage; no physical abuse. No history of childhood trauma.
Other significant information: Has a largely unexplored talent for drawing.
