Born and raised near Green Bank, West Virginia. Father was the postmaster in nearby Marlinton and is now retired; mother ran a small beauty salon out of the family home. Bacon is the elder of two children; he has a sister three years younger. Family relationships generally affectionate but father had difficulty expressing emotions or empathy. Paternal grandparents also lived in the area and Bacon was close to his grandfather, a Freewill Baptist minister who died two years after Bacon's entry into military service. Grandfather was a partially disabled Navy veteran and influenced his grandson's decision to join the service after high school.
Bacon married Virginia (“Gina”) Patterson seven years into his Navy career and has one son, Robert (“Bobby”), age 9 at the time of Janus' first voyage. Bacon's marriage ended in divorce about 18 months prior to Janus' first voyage and his ex-wife was killed in a car accident six months later along with her lover. Bacon later learned that she had been increasingly involved with this man, a former high school boyfriend, for the two years prior to the divorce. Bacon remains on good terms with Gina's parents, who live in Norfolk, Virginia, and relies on them to care for his son when he is deployed.
Holds a bachelor's degree in history, which he earned six years into his military service. Active in his high school's drama club as a stagehand and character actor.
Worked as a stock boy and cashier at a local grocery store while in high school. Joined the Navy shortly after graduation.
Freewill Baptist but has not attended for some time.
A history buff with wide-ranging interests. Enjoys hiking and camping when opportunity permits.
Divorce from wife followed by her death, which ended hopes for reconciliation. His discovery of her long-term adultery left him dealing with both rage and feelings of inadequacy as a husband. Continues to struggle with guilt over his part in the marital failure and over his perceived neglect of his son; does not want to repeat his father's pattern of being emotionally unavailable.
Entered Navy at age 18 and received training as a medical corpsman, becoming a SEAL at age 22. Four years later, after completing his bachelor's degree, Bacon was accepted to Officer Candidate School. He is now a lieutenant and is close to the selection point for lieutenant commander. He is strongly considering retirement at the 20-year mark in order to spend more time with his son.
