My seventh birthday at grandmother's house, with little sister.
I was born in Charleston, West Virginia; however I grew up alternating between homes there and in Ohio. While moving back and forth every few years created difficulties in some aspects, it also created two valuable benefits. First, I became aware that people view life differently in neighboring regions of the world. Second, I developed a yearning to discover what lies beyond the horizon. I also became fascinated with the history and geography of each place we lived. I earned my Bachelor's of Arts degree in History from West Virginia State College, now WV State University. I was a transfer student from Bob Jones University where I had been a Social Studies Education major. I served in the United States Air Force after earning my commission through Officer Training School at Lackland AFB, in San Antonio, TX. At technical training school, on Keesler AFB, MS, I met my wife, Avalyn. She was assigned to Scott, AFB outside of St. Louis, MO while I became executive officer of a radar site in the upper peninsula of Michigan. We dated long distance for many months, but after we married I managed reassignment to Scott AFB also.
My return to civilian life led me through several jobs and potential career choices. I worked as a shipyard pipefitter, a retail salesman, and as US postal letter carrier before becoming a teacher in north central Florida. I've also enjoyed coaching both boys and girls soccer at the high school and middle school levels. All of these experiences contribute to the plots, situations, and character attributes found in my stories. None of my characters are any single person whom I have known. Rather they are composites of similar traits found among several friends and acquaintances. I should also note that none of the experiences recounted are in any measure a fanciful retelling of actual events in my life.
